Step 1: start with small, manageable time commitments

If you’re wondering how to pray daily this step is for you! A lot of the time, we can get caught up in needing to go all out and schedule these lavish appointments with the Lord in a gorgeous closet closet filled with candles and scripture.

While prayer in a secluded place is necessary and amazing for your spiritual growth, it’s not the only way to pray.

Start by dedicating just 2-5 minutes a day to prayer. Establishing a daily prayer habit that is consistent is more important than longer prayer sessions. This will end up growing and it will end up getting easier for you to prayer for longer periods!

Ideas to fit your prayer into your already created routine:

  • Set an alarm on your phone for 3 different times a day. When the alarm goes off, say a quick prayer (no it doesn’t matter where you are! Tell the Lord you acknowledge him and pray what is on your heart!)
  • Pray as soon as you wake up in the morning before getting out of bed
  • Pray while brushing your teeth
  • Pray while commuting to work
  • Pray before each time you eat or drink something

Step 2: choose a dedicated prayer space

This is for those that have the ability and time! When starting a new habit, it can be daunting to create an entirely new routine – even when it’s something as necessary as prayer.

If you have the ability, find a quiet, comfortable space where you can focus with distractions and make this your “sacred” spot. For me, that is on my couch at 5am before my toddler wakes up and while my husband is either still sleeping or at the gym.

While I’d love to set up my own prayer room, that isn’t an option in the rental house I’m in, so I try to find something that quiet and secluded enough to practice my consistent prayer routine.

If you’d like, trying adding a few things to make the space cozy and a place you want to be! Ideas: a candle, a bible, a cute journal, and pens / highlighters you love.

This is a great idea for those who are able to make it work but a reminder, this isn’t necessary if you are just starting out creating your prayer life routine. Take time to just make prayer the most important part of your day FIRST then build!

Step 3: follow a simple prayer structure

The next tip I have to help you create a consistent prayer routine is to follow a prayer structure. Structured prayers give you a roadmap to prayer and make it easier to stay on track and know what to say!

A common framework that people use is ACTS:

  • Adoration: Tell God you love him and you are devoted to him.
  • Confession: Confess the sins you feel in your heart, give it all to God.
  • Thanksgiving: Give God thanks for His GOODNESS! There is so much we can thank God for! (If you can’t think of anything, remember you are here reading this blog- you can thank Him for the breath in your lungs and for finding this blog!)
  • Supplication: Ask for what you want, talk to Him about what is on your heart, pray for others that need it, and come to Him with your requests! At the end of the day, His will be done but he wants to hear what is on your heart!

This is the framework I follow while praying and it’s helped me ensure I am thanking God daily, praising him THEN asking for what I want!

Step 4: incorporate prayer life into daily activities

If you’re looking to make your prayer life extremely consistent, pray at all times- whenever you can! I mentioned above to pray while brushing your teeth or commuting, but there are so many more moments we can turn to prayer.

  • Pray instead of scrolling on social media
  • Pray before turning your TV on
  • Pray during breaks at work
  • Pray when walking in nature
  • Pray before, during, and after your workout
  • Go on prayer walks
  • Pray while hugging your spouse or kids
  • Pray before playing pickleball

Prayer can easily be integrated into your daily life, you just have to start making the small changes to incorporate this into your life.

Brief moments of connection with God throughout the day will help inforce the consistency you need to have a strong prayer life!

Sometimes we need some help to develop our prayer life and that is totally fine! Some great options are structured books that help you write down your gratitude and prayer requests.

These resources can offer prompts and reminders that will help you structure and enhance your time with God and lead you to a stronger prayer life.

Here are a couple books and journals I recommend:

Whether you are just looking for an idea to add to your current prayer routine or you are looking to start the journal to creating a prayer life, these 5 steps will help you!

Remember to stay consistent. Doing something small every day for 2 minutes is far better than doing something every few days for 10 minutes. The goal is to create a habit of putting God first!

Creating a prayer life takes time but with commitment, it will grow strong and you will see the fruits of your efforts!

The benefits of having a consistent prayer life will bring you peace, comfort, and a closer relationship with God – which we all need!
