1. Start each day with prayer and scripture
Though this might sound like a broken record, it’s has to be the first tip because it’s the most important. It doesn’t matter if you have 30 minutes or 5 minutes, starting each day with the word of God will change your life.
If you are someone who has a set routine each morning that rarely changes, I recommend waking up about 15-20 minutes early to give you time to send reading your bible and praying.
If you are someone who has an inconsistent morning routine (hello, mothers!) then trying to wake up at a consistent time that is before your day usually starts is a great option.
Ways to help strengthen this habit:
- Keep your Bible, notebook, and pen/highlighter in the area you plan to complete your morning study.
- Set your alarm and place it on the opposite side of the room to force yourself to get out of bed.
- Download YouVersion and pick a devotional that excites you. (I recommend YouVersion because it’s FREE!)
2. Reflect God’s love in your interactions
John 15:12 says, “My command is this: Love each other as I have loved you.”
We are to reflect God’s love by treating others with kindness, patience, and respect in all interactions.
These small interactions with family, friends, and strangers could be the only interaction they have that day that is rooted in the love of Jesus.
Remind yourself daily to shine the light of Jesus for others. This is a powerful way to demonstrate your faith and can have an everlasting effect on others.
Ways to help strengthen this habit:
- Keep a sticky note in your car, on your fridge, or on your bathroom mirror with John 15:12 written on it.
- Set an alarm on your phone reminding you to reflect God’s love in your interactions.
3. Serve others in little simple ways (a cornerstone of Christian living!)
Not only did God put us on this earth to love others, he also calls us to serve others. We can see this in Peter 4:10 – “Each of you should use whatever gift you have received to serve others, as faithful stewards of God’s grace in its various forms.”
It’s easy to get caught up in wondering what our gift is and allowing that to paralyze us instead of making the decision to serve others.
Serving others is a strong pillar of christian living and can simply be an act of generosity or kindness!
Ways to serve others in simple ways:
- Volunteering (anywhere!)
- Helping a neighbor with a challenging task
- Offering encouragement or assistance to someone on a big day
- Joining the serve team at church
4. Incorporate faith into decision making
When talking about how to live out your faith, it’s important to discuss how to align our decisions with biblical principles. This is only possible if we are reading the Bible, so make sure you are following tip #1!
When making a decision whether it
be financially, for your career, or a relationship, bring that request/idea to God first. Pray over the big decision and ask for God’s provision. Ask for the Holy Spirit to walk with you and guide you to making the right decision.
We can seek and gain wisdom through prayer.
5. Speak words that build others up
Another important tip when it comes to christian living is to use encouraging words that lift others up rather than resorting to gossip, criticism or negative talk.
We can see in Ephesians 4:29, God tells us to not let any unwholesome talk come out of our mouth.
By removing the critical words that can flow from our mouth, we can focus on kindness and leading with love, which is the base of Christian living.
6. Prioritize time with family and community
God calls us to be in community, he didn’t call us to walk this life alone.
When we start to feel uncomfortable emotions like anxiety, depression, overwhelm, or anger, take some time to turn to your support system. But more importantly, turn to your support system that is rooted in Christ.
Engaging in Christian community will help strengthen your daily faith and help you turn to Christ in moments that matter most.
And just to mention again, turn Christian living isn’t done alone, it’s done with community!
7. Practice gratitude daily
If you’re anything like me, it seems like everyone everywhere is recommending to practice gratitude every day. Like, write down 3 things you are grateful for every morning and it’s supposed to change your mood for the day.
That’s not how it works. Practicing true gratitude takes acknowledgement, prayer, and reflection throughout the day – not just in the morning.
Create a habit of thanking God for the life he has given you and all the good you have going on. Instead of always turning to God when things aren’t going our way, let’s normalize turning to him when things are actually GREAT!
Ways to make this christian living habit easier:
- Grab a gratitude notebook and fill it with the good you have going on and pray on the gratitude throughout the day.
- Find a gratitude partner and keep each other accountable.
- Set a few alarms on your phone with different things you are grateful for. When the alarm goes off, sit in prayer for a moment and thank God!
8. Stay accountable to (and with) fellow believers
4 words: join a small group! Being in regular fellowship helps keep your faith strong and provides the encouragement for spiritual growth that we all need.
Being around brothers and sisters in Christ just once a week is not enough, we need to be accountable and find accountability partners and small groups to deepen our faith with.
9. Integrate faith into work and hobbies
Another great way to consistently live out christian living is to incorporate your faith everywhere you can. That means incorporating it into your relationships, work, and hobbies!
Your faith has a strong influence on your work ethic and attitude so can you image how the holy spirit will guide you through everything you do when you seek Him first?
Not only is this a great way to flex your faith muscle, this is a great way to share the word of God with others because remember, at the end of the day, we are here to spread the Gospel and lead others to Christ!
Ways to incorporate your faith into hobbies/work:
- Pray for your co-workers and the company you work for.
- Ask God for creative/physical abilities before performing a hobby.
- Praise God for the goodness he is bringing to your job/hobby.
10. Keep God at the center of your goals
Lastly, keeping God at the center of your goals is a great way to achieve everything you venture out to do. God should be the foundation for our personal and professional goals because He is the one that will make a way for us to reach out goals.
Setting faith centered goals helps keep your sight on the Lord and not lose sight of the bigger picture. To live out our faith, we need to make sure God is at the center of it all.
This will also help us keep our eyes on God’s plan, not ours!
