Why Starting Your Day with God Matters

As Christians, we know God wants us to spend time with him. But spending time specifically with God in the morning, by ourselves, is actually part of scripture!

In Psalm 5:3, we see David making time in the morning to pray and spend time with God, “In the morning, Lord, you hear my voice; in the morning I lay my requests before you…”

Though this might not look like the daily devotional that we know today, it was the best way David knew to have intimate time with God!

We also see in Mark 1:35 that Jesus prays before the sun rises in a solitary place.

No matter what the day brings, we are all carrying baggage with us and some days that baggage is heavier than others. Have you ever woken up and thought about something that happened days, weeks, or years ago? And it instantly puts you in a bad mood?

You aren’t alone in that. I’m pretty sure if we are being honest, we’ve all been there (and might even there right now!).

Here’s what we need to understand about the importance of aligning our heart with God first thing in the morning… Spending that time with God gives us the peace we need to continue our day with the right heart posture.

The Bible is the one book that will always give us the correct heart posture what we need in the moment.

How to start your day with morning daily devotionals

We all know we should start our morning with God, but HOW? There are so many distractions that can take away our focus from children to spouses to work. I know it might seem difficult to plan this, but hear me out here, I have ideas for you!

The first morning devotional tip is to find a spot in your house that you can start your day with God. You could go to your closet, stay in bed, sit outside, or at the kitchen table. Regardless, try to find a spot that is free of distractions.

Once you know where you want to go, my next morning devotion tip is to be consistent. Figure out the best time for your to start your day with God and do that.

For some people it’s not realistic to wake up before their children because the sleep schedule of a child can be unpredictable. If that’s you, try reading your time with God at breakfast or while your child is eating.

Lastly, you need to select a devotional resource that you can follow. I’ve used a lot of resources from The Daily Grace but I also recommend Sadie Robertson Huff’s Live on Purpose or My Utmost for His Highest

If you are looking for a free option, download the app YouVersion. They have the most incredible free devotions and they make it easy for you to get God’s word every single day.

Essential elements of morning devotionals

The next daily devotion tip is to have a plan that you can follow every day. I have a 4 step process I follow (and I know 4 steps sounds like a lot but give it a try!).

Prayer

Take time before you dive into your daily devotion by talking to God and inviting him into your morning. If you don’t know what to say, just ask him to give you guidance during your morning time.

Scripture/Daily Devotionals

This is where your devotion comes in. Dive into your daily devotional and the scripture that comes with it. Be sure to pull out your bible and read the scriptures from there. If you don’t have a bible, this is the one I use.

Journal

This is a time to reflect on what you read during your morning devotion. Take time to reflect on the scriptures you read, how they moved you, how they apply to your life, and what you learned.

Though it’s important to read scripture, it’s also very important to understand how it applies to your life. This is how you let it change your heart posture – through reflection.

Prayer

Close out your morning reflection by thanking God for the time this morning. Be sure to thank him for all the good you have in your life and talk to him about anything heavy you are walking through.

Leave your anxieties and worries at his feet. This is your time to drop the baggage you are carrying and release it. Trust that God will move mountains and provide miracles in your life.

Stay consistent and keep it simple

Starting any routine is difficult, especially in the beginning. In order to stay consistent and not give up, you need to keep it simple.

When you start your morning with God, it doesn’t have to be long, a 10-15 minute commitment is all you need to get started. As you start to make this a habit, you can pray and ask God how you can make your time with him more meaningful.

Another great way to stay consistent with your morning devotion is to set a reminder on your phone or use an accountability partner. Find a sister or brother in Christ and make a pact to keep each other accountable on completing your daily devotion.

Make it personal – this is YOUR time!

YOUR time with God is YOUR time. Don’t worry about how other people do it. You can take ideas from others and even a little inspiration but remember at the end of the day this is about your relationship with God.

If you feel the Lord through music, play some Worship music. If you like focusing on gratitude, create a gratitude list. If you are into meditation, try meditating on God’s love for you. If you want to be still, be still and listen for God’s voice.

By making this time something YOU enjoy, you will be more likely to follow through.
