5 Need To Know Bible Verses for Strength When You Feel Anxious
Though it might not seem like it in the moment, we as Christians are given a few different lifelines when we face anxiety. Today we are going to look at 5 bible verses for strength and dissect them to better understand how they apply to our lives.
A moment of anxiety can be a whirlwind. From a gut wrenching punch in the stomach to uncontrollable fast breathing and brain fog, anxiety impacts our entire body.
I know it can feel debilitating at times, these 5 bible verses for strength are a tool to help you remember what truly matters and that God is here to comfort you.
Not only is God here to comfort you, he wants to comfort you and these bible verses for strength show us just that!
I was inspired to write this post for 2 reasons:
1) I have suffered with anxiety to the point of feeling like I can’t move because my stomach has hurt so bad and I want to help other women never have to feel that pain.
2) I was flipping through my bible this morning and a couple bible verses for strength stood out to me and I knew I needed to write about that.
Remember, you don’t need to understand every aspect of the bible in order to receive the peace it can offer. The Spirit is here to guide you through it.
I’m someone who has suffered from anxiety for well over a decade- at least the last 15 years. There have been moments of my life where I felt like it was taking over my life.
It wasn’t until 2 years ago when I got saved that I understood Jesus offered us an answer to anxiety.
Before we get started, I want to note that I am not a physician and this is not medical advice. These are solutions to anxiety that have helped me in the past and help me now.

5 Bible Verses For Strength
Verse 1: Romans 14:13
“May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace as you trust in him, so that you may overflow with hope by the power of the Holy Spirit.”
This verse is from a prayer that Paul is praying and it’s a beautiful statement about what God can do in our hearts.
God has the power to take your anxious thoughts and instead fill you with joy and peace and we receive that by believing in the true power of God.
Remember that God is omnipotent, meaning he is all-powerful, truly limitless. Doesn’t that mean he deserves our trust in moments of anxiety?
Lean into the trust of who God is today and be filled with the hope and power the Holy Spirit will bring you.
Verse 2: Colossians 2:6
“So then, just as you received Christ Jesus as Lord, continue to live your lives in him”
Though this verse is short, it’s a very powerful bible verse for strength that I think we sometimes forget about.
When we receive Christ as Lord, we are choosing to walk with him and we receive the peace he offers.
But on the days leading up to a baptism or surrounding the day we accept Christ as our savior, those are normally the days we are on fire for Christ, reading the bible, attending church, and spreading his goodness.
But as that excitement starts to wear off, we slowly get too busy to open the bible everyday and church is missed once and then you turn around and it’s been a month since you’ve attended.
It’s important that when we make the choice to receive Christ that we continue to live our lives in him.
Picking up the bible once a week isn’t going to cut it.
And please don’t take this as me creating rules around reading the bible, this is simply the truth. It’s easy to forget we have an answer to our suffering when we aren’t reminded of it daily!
And to piggy back off this verse, let’s read the next one.
Verse 3: Colossians 2:7
“rooted and built up in him, strengthened in the faith as you were taught, overflowing with thankfulness.”
I broke these 2 verses up because something strong stood out to me in each verse.
If you’re anything like me, you didn’t grow up with Christ. I grew up attending church, but I didn’t even know you had to have a relationship with Jesus, I thought if you just knew of him, you were saved.
I didn’t know you needed to read the bible, much less accept Jesus as your Lord and Savior! These were foreign concepts to me.
As I began to build my faith, I started to understand the importance of learning what the bible says as these are the teachings that truly help us navigate life.
What stands out to me in this verse is the end overflowing with thankfulness. There are two things that can’t coexist- anxiety and gratitude. One will always overpower the other.
When we are built up in Christ, we show more gratitude. We thank God for the trials and tribulations we are facing rather than letting those moments spiral into anxious territory.
Today, remind yourself that you are rooted in Christ and that means you have the power of gratitude and thankfulness to fight off any anxious feeling that comes your way.
Verse 4: Philippians 4:6-7
“Do not be anxious about anything, but in every situation, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God. And the peace of God, which transcends all understanding, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.”
If you claim to be a christian, you’ve seen this verse at some point or heard about it in church!
It’s a powerful bible verse for strength that most people turn to first. But I want to truly dissect what this verse is telling us we need to do (verse 6) to receive the peace that God can offer (verse 7).
This verse isn’t as simple as saying I accepted Jesus as my savior, I will never have anxiety anymore!
The first verse starts by telling us not to be anxious – easier said than done, right? But most importantly, this verse gives us specific instructions on how to not be anxious.
It then tells us in every situation through prayer and thanksgiving present your request to God.
This means we need to pray to the Lord and thank him for his goodness… that’s where the difficult part comes in. In a normal moment in life, this would be an easy task but in moments of anxiety, finding anything to be grateful for can be difficult.
What’s important to take away from this verse is that we need to do our active part if we want to feel the peace of God that transcends all understanding.
If we aren’t doing our part of praying and giving thanks to the Lord, we aren’t going to feel that peace he promises us.
Next time you feel anxiety coming on, drop to your knees and pray. Give your requests and thoughts to God and praise him for his goodness. Look for the good in your life that God has blessed you with.
Verse 5: 1 Corinthians 1:21
“so that your faith might not rest on human wisdom, but on God’s power”
Right before this verse, Paul tells us that his message and preaching were not with wise and persuasive words, but just a demonstration of the Spirit’s power.
As saved christians, The Holy Spirit walks with us, everyday. We are never alone.
I love this verse in 1 Corinthians because Paul reminds us that our faith is not in man but in God’s power.
God has the power to do anything. He is omniscient, omnipotent, and omnipresent – all-knowing, all-powerful, and everywhere all the time.
Remember what a blessing it is that we don’t have to do this alone.
I hope next time you feel anxious, you turn to these bible verses and remember you have another way to handle these feelings.
If you’re looking for more ways to overcome anxiety in the moment, take a look at my post on prayers for anxiety. I offer short, simple prayers you can use in moments of distress or leading up to those moments.
Of course, if your anxiety feels uncontrollable, I always recommend you see a physician to see if treatment is necessary. I’ve seen doctors for my anxiety in the past and they can offer solutions that can help bridge the gap from where you are to where you want to be.
